To celebrate Direct Support Professional (DSP) Recognition Week, Aspire would like to recognize and honor Nikia Love for her 17 years of dedication and support for people with disabilities!

For Nikia, being a Direct Support Professional (DSP) is much more than just a job; it’s a deeply personal calling. Having a cousin with Down syndrome, Nikia’s journey into the field began with family. Along with her aunt, she supported her cousin, John, and through those experiences, she developed a passion for supporting individuals with disabilities.

The connection she formed with John inspired her to dedicate her life to making others feel loved and included, especially those who might not have families of their own.

When thinking about the people she supports, Nikia says that “I like to make them feel like they are a part of this world, and that they are loved like family.” For Nikia, every person she supports is like family.

Working at one of Apire’s Community Homes for 17 years, Nikia takes great pride in helping residents overcome their challenges and celebrating their successes. She understands the importance of making them feel wanted and valued, treating them as if they were her own children. Every day, Nikia helps them achieve goals, take part in new experiences, and feel the love and care they deserve.

“It’s a rush to me to be able to do the things that I do for them. Someone needs to do it, but it needs to be done with love,” she says, knowing that her efforts bring light into their lives and create moments of genuine happiness. Her dedication shines through in every relationship she builds, knowing the impact she has on their lives and the joy she brings them.

One of Nikia’s most cherished memories comes from a time when one of the individuals in Aspire’s Community Home was in the hospital. While in the hospital, she was struggling with memory loss and was having a hard time remembering familiar faces and people.  As soon as Nikia entered the room, something truly special happened, her face lit up and she immediately recognized her.

Overwhelmed with emotion, both Nikia and the individual cried out to each other and embraced, bringing tears to everyone in the room.

This moment is a testament to the deep connections Nikia builds and the love she pours into her work. For her, being there for those who need it most is not just a responsibility—it’s a joy.

The amazing work that Nikia does is a shining example of what it truly means to be a DSP here at Aspire. From advocating on behalf of others to welcoming any challenge with kindness, compassion, and a smile, Aspire is so grateful for her dedication and continued grace.
