Halloween is a time for costumes, candy, and the excitement of seeing familiar faces around the neighborhood. Porch lights glow, doorbells ring, and neighbors come together to share in a tradition that brings joy to people of all ages.

But for nearly 50 years, one Aspire Community Home experienced a very different kind of Halloween.

The people who lived there decorated their home, filled a bowl with candy, and looked forward to welcoming trick-or-treaters. Yet year after year, no one stopped by.

Until one family decided to change their Halloween plans.

A Simple Idea, A Meaningful Moment

During an October visit to a Community Home, CEO Serena Alaily learned something she couldn’t forget.

Darlene, an Aspire team member, shared that despite years of preparing for Halloween, the home had never welcomed a single trick-or-treater. What made the story even more personal was that the home was just down the street from Serena’s own.

That evening, Serena shared what she’d learned with her three daughters.

Her daughter Maddy had a simple suggestion.

And that’s exactly what they did.

Serena’s daughters and their friends trick-or-treating at the Community Home.

Serena and her daughters visited the home, bringing with them the excitement of Halloween and the opportunity to share a tradition with their neighbors. What followed was a moment filled with laughter, joy, and connection.

For the people who had decorated their home and prepared candy year after year, there were finally neighbors to welcome and a celebration to share. It was a simple visit, but one that meant so much.

The Meaning of Feeling at Home

A home is more than the place where we live.

It’s where we build friendships, celebrate traditions, create memories, and feel connected to the people around us.

For people with disabilities, having opportunities to enjoy those everyday moments is an important part of building a life filled with independence, belonging, and purpose.

Here at Aspire, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to feel at home, not just within their own walls, but throughout their neighborhood.

That’s what makes this Halloween story so meaningful.

The people living in the home were already reaching out to their community. Their decorations were up, their candy was ready, and their door was open to connection. All it took was someone choosing to stop by.

Belonging Begins With Us

As we celebrate Halloween this year, Serena’s story is a reminder that meaningful connections don’t always require grand gestures.

Sometimes, they begin with a friendly hello, a shared tradition, or a few minutes spent getting to know someone who lives just down the street.

To the families, friends, donors, and supporters who help make community living possible at Aspire, thank you. Your support helps create opportunities for people with disabilities to build lives filled with friendship, choice, and connection.

And to everyone celebrating Halloween, we hope this story inspires you to look a little closer at the community around you.

You never know how much joy a simple knock at the door might bring.

Because everyone deserves more than a place to live. Everyone deserves a place to belong.
