A Future Within Reach

Nigel’s journey shows what can happen when the right opportunity is met with support and confidence grows. 

At 26 years old, Nigel is building something many people dream of: a career he’s proud of and a future he can call his own. For a long time, that future felt uncertain. 

Nigel has always been known for his kind heart and willingness to help others. He enjoys simple pleasures—playing video games with friends, going to the movies, and connecting with people at work. Nigel found early success in securing a job, first at a movie theater and then at a local grocery store, where he was employed for 5 years.  

What began as positive work experiences slowly became an example of the real challenges people with disabilities face in the workforce. 

Despite his dedication, Nigel struggled to find stable, meaningful employment. His work was limited to part-time hours, making it difficult to build financial independence or plan for the future.  

Over time, changes in management created an environment where Nigel no longer felt supported. He recalls feeling “upset, frustrated, and angry” as expectations became unclear and criticism replaced encouragement. His mom saw the toll it took on her son, who was once eager to work but began to lose confidence and dread going in each day. 

Like many individuals with disabilities, Nigel wasn’t lacking ability or work ethic, he was lacking access. His experience underscores the progress still needed to better support employees with disabilities in the workplace. 

Everything began to change though, when Nigel was introduced to Aspire’s Employment Training Program. 

At first, he was nervous. The idea of something new, and the chance of not being accepted, felt daunting. But once he started the program, Nigel quickly found something that had been missing: a team that believed in him. 

Through hands-on training, Nigel gained practical skills in warehouse operations. He especially loved learning safety procedures and how to operate a forklift, skills that made him feel capable and prepared for the next step in his career. Even more importantly, he gained confidence, motivation, and a sense of accountability. He learned how to advocate for himself, work as part of a team, and take pride in his contributions. 

“I feel proud,” Nigel says. 

That pride has stayed with him in his current role at Wesco, where he now works full-time in a warehouse position. He approaches his work with focus and dedication and truly loves what he does. He often arrives an hour early and takes on overtime, eager to contribute and grow. 

But what stands out most to Nigel isn’t just the work, it’s the environment. 

“The people are positive,” he says. “No harsh words, no negativity. They understand me.” 

For the first time, Nigel feels truly supported by his coworkers and supervisor. When he has questions, they help. When he shows up, they value his effort. That sense of belonging has transformed not only how he works, but how he sees himself. 

He is more confident. More independent. More motivated than ever. 

And at home, his mom sees the difference every day. 

After years of worrying about whether Nigel would be able to support himself, she now feels something she hadn’t felt in a long time: relief. 

“It means everything to me,” she says. “I’m his only parent. I want to know he’ll be okay.” 

Today, Nigel is earning his own money, saving for the future, and enjoying the life he’s building and discovering what dreaming bigger can look like. His mom now allows herself to imagine possibilities that once felt out of reach: a family of his own, a stable and happy life. 

For years, Nigel worked hard but never quite felt like he belonged. Today, he walks in to work each morning knowing he is part of a team that values him. Because when people are given the chance to belong, their confidence and independence grow, and their future becomes filled with possibilities.
